As a general rule, ecology is about the interdependence of all things biological. As such, environmentalists by default must acknowledge collective issues. This is true independent of liberal/conservative bents. The Libertarian mindset on the other hand is all about individuality rather than collectivism. As such, libertarian ideals are inconsistent with modern biology. Consider that legal knowledge is quite ancient, many of our American ideas of government are over 2000 years old, while even a modest understanding of ecology is only a about 150 years old, and you can see why our views on human economic affairs are much more influenced by ancient thought than modern thought. IMO, a great problem. To make a argument from physics, Libertarians think that life exists under conditions of rarified gas dynamics, random molecules zipping around and only occasionally bumping into one another, Communists think that life exists in a crystal lattice, and if any individual molecule vibrates a little too much, the lattice will shatter, while I think that life exists in liquid water, where there is plenty of freedom for individual movement, but there are also lots of interconnections.
