In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

Uncle, re: Why should we assume electing a Democrat provides a greater chance for living in peace?

We shouldn't. There's nothing about being a Democrat as opposed to a Republican that makes a person a better leader in times of great change and risk. What I can say, however, is that the current crop of Republicans who run Congress and the executive branch have proven themselves reckless, thoughtless, poorly principled and far too willing to bet other peoples lives on a sucker bet. The result is the lost lives of good men and women, catastrophic injuries to others, hundreds of billions of dollars of wasted taxpayer money, and an Iraq that is inexorably turning into the Iraq we least wanted to see.

And then, of course, there's the hit that we've taken internationally in terms of how our judgement, trustworthiness and the benevolence of our government are viewed.

The fact that leftists are taking power through elections in South America and that in the Middle East the more radical Islamists are increasing their support among the populations is more than troubling. I can only imagine the internal, long range planning of the Pakistanis, Chinese and Russians.

How many Delays, Cheneys, and Bushes do you think would have kept their war wimp convictions if it was them or their kids fighting and dying? (Note that Rumsfeld spent the night in Iraq this week FOR THE FIRST TIME, and he's probably the toughest one of them all.) The first Bush was the real deal, this president is a spoiled, bratty kid whose claim to greatness is that he's one hell of a political animal.

I kind of like the Samuri tradition of leaders falling on their swords when it turns out they've sent others to die on a failed mission. I'm very confident we'd have never gone if that had loomed in their future but it was easier to send others to be pierced by swords, too easy.

Damn I hate Remfs, always have. Ed

Hi unclewest; Re: "May I remind you that Democrat Woodrow Wilson got us into WWI; ..."

My only worry is that the Republican party has become popular and a lot of the fools who should be making foolish policies for the Democratic party are now working for the Republicans.

-- Carl

P.S. You should probably add to your list the various British liberals that have got their country into war. Chamberlain comes to mind, and oh, who's that guy? Oh yes, it was Blair who got Britain into Iraq.
