That and the medical system costs. Pensions that promised medical are taking it in the wazoo.
As for Unions being the whipping boy...maybe they should be?

GM is still paying laid off workers $29/hour and full bennies. No wonder all the manufacturing is going out of the country.

"No, what will bankrupt "the country as a whole" is losing the middle class."

No kidding. No matter what else you might say about Henry Ford, even he recognized that by paying his workers more than the prevailing wage, he was creating customers for his cars.

RE:"No, what will bankrupt "the country as a whole" is losing the middle class."

I've seen that for a while with real estate. Generational warfare coming. No middle class, just haves and have nots. I have to point at Clinton and Greenspan but it's plain to see.

Ted thinks it's wonderful rich people got a free $500k.

re: :"I cannot believe GM's Union demanded a better plan than it -- the Union will bankrupt GM."
*****
Plus hundreds of other companies and the country as a whole.

I wonder where the record S&P profits are coming from?

Unions are a favorite whipping boy because the members generally make more money, so when they ask for higher wages or even to maintain their benefits, even the lower wage workers turn on them as greedy. People forget that higher wages beget higher wages even in other industries (and the reverse is true).

No, what will bankrupt "the country as a whole" is losing the middle class.

Well said.

They begrudge every cent the little guy makes....the typical blue collar worker......but never say squat about the millions made by upper mgmt. Has anyone on this thread ever worked in a factory? One summer, I got a job working in a tv factory. I lasted a month. It is the most mind numbing, frustrating, degrading work. All day you move one component from one belt to another belt. Forget the fumes and crap they breathe into their lungs.......its a wonder they don't go insane.

Too many people in this country were born into good times and have no idea how so many struggle to survive. They are lucky that there are people who have no choice but to do that kind of work.

When did the rich in this country become saints and the poor the evil ones? Its insane. Everything has been turned upside down.
