The government has made alcohol illegal. It is not a strawman. We have direct experience making alcohol illegal, and then we have direct experience of making it legal again- despite the costs (and huge costs they are) to society. Alcohol is the perfect comparison really. So you are incorrect about that one not being directly involved with the government.

So what DO you think? Should people drinking be forced to pay for all the societal costs they inflict on us? I've seen some pretty staggering numbers wrt costs our society bears because of alcohol.

And you have STILL not addressed the huge component alcohol plays in crime. There's tons of statistics out there on how aggressive alcohol can make people, and on its contributory presence to crime.
