The biggest code base is still COBOL, which survives because it's best at what it was designed to do: implement business logic by programmers in a commercial setting. Languages like C++ and Java are great for writing compilers and front ends, but a business analyst / programmer has neither the time nor the desire (and maybe the skill) to use them. COBOL is still around just as the four-wheel car is still here, and the four-legged animal too. Even if all the college professors of the world and their brain-washed students ignore it, COBOL can be used for practically any purpose. The fact that it isn't being used for web-based interfaces for example, is due only to the ignorance of the software industry.
