Well, your problem is that you lump together all computers. You need to start separating servers (workstations) and PCs. Servers and workstations have been on CPUs with 64 bit architecture for many years, so nothing new here.

With PCs we are moving towards appliance model. Simple, cheap, disposable appliance like a cell phone. I don't care if my cell phone has 16-, 32- or 64-bit CPU inside it. I just use it.
When PCs were at $3,000 a piece then paying $100 for Windows was somewhat justified. Now Windows is the most expensive, most unreliable and high maintenance piece of a PC.

I've bought two AMD 64 boxes in the last six months and am very happy with them.

Though the custom built one runs rings around the Compaq box, despite the same processor.
