We put a man on the moon but we can't cure cancer, how does that make sense? The fact is, we will never have enough enforcement to stop lots of illegals coming in. We will never have enough to stop millions from being employed. We will never have enough enforcement to find all the "illegal alien criminals" and deport them, just like we can't stop all the drug dealers and prostitute and illegal card games and tax evasion and a zillion other endemic illegal activities in our system. Go ahead and lock up and deport the few you get your hands on if you feel better. The real issue is how you deal with the 11 million already here and the tens of millions more who want to come, most of whom will succeed in violating our borders. Set up a system to regularize the flow and introduce some coherence instead of saying we will stop this evil scourge, knowing that we never, never, never will. The usual counter-argument to that position is that I advocate doing nothing in the face of wrongdoing, which isn't true. But that takes you back to the "we will stop it all" position that has demonstrably failed for decades now. How would you make it work, with 11 million illegals and millions more on the way? How much do you spend, how may troops do you commit, how many deportation centers will you pay for? Saying "as many as we need to get the job done" is not a realistic policy answer. We don't have the money or the manpower. If we did, someone would have done it by now. We have had 3 1/2 terms of rightwing presidents who were tough guys, right?
