That's the "straw man" argument.

Well, that brought the predictable responses out of the woodwork. <g>

Maybe if you look at everything from from a partisan perspective it is. But if you look at things in the abstract, it raises a serious question. Is there anything that the government can do in response to 9/11 that would be worse than another 9/11?

I wouldn't begin to suggest that what has been done remotely approaches that threshold. I'm on record as having no quarrel with what's been done--a lot of questions, but no quarrel.

The impression I get, though, is that a lot of people such as you do not see a threshold. You would award carte blanche to the president in wartime. That makes me cringe. I think it's a shame that there has been no constructive discussion on where the threshold might be. I am more concerned about those who don't consider it an appropriate question than I am about those who are currently screaming like a bunch of stuck pigs. The latter can't hurt me.
