It is his personal account of his stay in the best facility in the U.S. where the success rate of cure is 17%.. That is not great is it. Oprah has it as her book of the month... My assessment of the drug situation and I worked with addicts on an outpatient basis only.. is that addictions should be treated, not penalized . Even though the success rate is low it is better than prison where one who goes in as an addict may come out as a criminal.. This book describes that . As long as alcohol, which I consider to be one of the more offensive drugs...is legal, why isn't weed which in most people does not produce the same violent behavior that alcohol can. Also, from the addicts with whom I worked were free in discussing the thrill of getting the drugs, the way in which they maneuvered their lives to sustain their habit.. would it not be better to have that under control. As far as making drugs available to our children. They are available now. How one manages ones life is part of rearing a child.. If there is booze in the home and parents drink how can they enforce no drinking.. Crack cocaine is so scary as it does not take more than one try to have one hooked. With this knowledge would you try it. Heroin on the other hand, if one is addicted and has a maintenance program, allows one to perform at high efficiency. Many Doctors are addicted.. One might never know as they can get the drugs.. My students were afraid of LSD as they saw what happened to Art Linkletter's daughter, jumping out of a window.. We try to enforce abstaining by having drugs illegal. We put someone in prison for a third offense. As a society I believe we have to review our thinking on drugs.. Simply saying NO is not an effective program... We need to involved persons such as James Frey in thinking through policies that can be put into laws that are more in touch with the problem and not anti productive...which is what I feel we have now. So I am for legalizing drugs... Think of what it would do to the crime rate. And on the lighter side, what would Columbia do.. I sat with someone from Columbia on the cruise I was on over Christmas.. YES, coffee and DRUGS... their biggest export...
