Kennedy and Johnson did in fact get us into vietnam.

I don't know what history books you read, but our involvement in Vietnam began in 1954, not in 1961 when JFK took office. It escalated in 1956, when we essentially "created" South Vietnam in contradiction to the terms of the Geneva Accords of 1954.

True, Kennedy didn't get us "out" of Vietnam, and true, Johnson escalated the war after inventing and lying about the Gulf of Tonkin incident. But neither one of them "got us into Vietnam."
