I think you can make a dent. You can't dent the far right, but you can move the middle. Many people have never really gotten correct information on this subject- and their opinions are based on prejudice. Those people can be educated, and changed- and I think by the time you were finished, you'd have a majority. I think KLP realizes that drug and alcohol users are self medicating - and they aren't "evil" (she said that, after all). That's the big step toward realizing that treatment, and not incarceration, is the logical tool to use in this area.

Drug legalization is not a demarcated left/right issue. It gets support and opposition from both sides.

Unfortunately, while what you say is true, it seems that most don't speak out until they're either retired or on their way out the door. Here's one from a Reagan campaigner that wrote a book on the subject:
