SS is much easier to solve than Medicare...which nobody wants to talk about. Many economists have pointed out that a tiny, and I mean tiny, increase in the FICA tax buys years of additional solvency for the system as it is currently constructed. I personally don't care for individual accounts, as most workers that have retirement accounts already have those in the form of 401(k), 403(b), etc. They can take their risk on that end. Social Security should be a predictable amount for life, as defined benefit pension plans are designed to be.

Add to the FICA change a recalibration of cost of living to a more reasonable measure and more solvency is bought. We are now ought to, what, 2050? longer?

Medicare, on the other hand, is nothing but a black hole...look out boomers.

Dear Kenneth E. Phillipps are you senile or under the influence of something?

SS does not create a surplus or a deficit in the budget. SS became underfunded by congress as benefits were increased beyond the ability of contributions to sustain benefits long long ago.

Are you simply lying again or suffering from some mental defect?

<<Instigator - SS is part of the solution - not part of the problem. Since 1986, SS runs a huge surplus every year. SS reduces the deficit - not contributes to it.>>

Unless we add to the pot, the current SS money will be gone in less than 25 years. Our government has taken our money and spent it in other places instead of holding it for the future.
Democrats and Republicans both agree there is not enough money, only the democraps would rather not let or help Bush address the issue. They are the party of "NO" with no solutions.
