As some may recall, I have long had a great respect for Sharon, going so far as to name my daughter (Ariel in Hebrew), after him.

She was born in 1988 when Sharon was in the political wilderness.

While I agreed with the withdrawal from Gaza as a military necessity, and even called for it on these pages, I didn't understand the last deal whereby he allowed Egypt to move so far up, with nothing in return other than useless guarantees' which I am certain he never expected to be honored.

One can only be left to wonder, but surely Sharon has exited the world stage and Netanyahu will come to power and reverse some of the current momentum.

I only hope that Netanyahu stays firm in the face of the US State Dept. who has its own ideas of what security for Israel means, at the same time allowing Hamas and Hezbollah to gain strength.

Sharon was living on borrowed time. He is over weight and had not been in very good shape. He went down when he did. Did he see his demise and make the break from the Likud as his last noble gesture?
