There are not enough secular Iraqis to make it happen. I would disagree. There are many Sunnis who recognize that a Jihadist Islamic Republic will not be in their best interests. These guys like the "finer things" in life.. They have NO DESIRE to give up their newly obtained modern conveniences, let alone their satellite TV, to some Taliban style fanatical Luddites. But that said, they recognize that the Jihadist DO serve the purpose of forcing the Shi'a dominated government to pay heed to their concerns and provide a motivation for the Sunni tribal leaders to withhold their tacit, or actual, support to Zarqawis group. Also, many are realizing (or eventually will) that the Salafists and Wahabbists will only perpetuate their suffering and alienation from power, not facilitate it. But right now, with the Shi'a government still infiltrated with Badr Corps and SCIRI elements, with strong links to Iran, the Sunnis will continue to support those groups that best oppose Iranian domination of Iraq. At least this is how I saw it from speaking with various people. As to my view of a three state solution, I'm against it. The last thing this world needs is a precedent to be set for jingoistic nationalism. I'm more interested in achieving a nationalism that establishes a national identity that transends religious and ethnic differences. Create three different states, and there will be some TRAUMATIC dislocations of vast quantities of people, as well a likley outright warfare as the final borders are fought over. And again, the Turks are HIGHLY unlikely to permit a Kurdish state, given that it would give their own Kurdish population the idea that they have the right to merge with their brethren. It is for all of these above reasons that I have definite reservations about the creation of a Palestinian state that denies citizenship to non-Palestinians. Hawk
