"There is no addiction physical or psychological for a recreational user."

Yes there is a psychological hook for recreational users. Many recreational users would also be classified as social users. In other words their social recreational life becomes bound to a pot smoking culture. One of the strongest needs in human beings, according to Maslow, is the need to belong. So, once your identity is defined as belonging to any particular culture, you have a very difficult time making any choice that would violate the group values and practices. Pot smoking is considered to be a gate keeper for opening the opportunity to other types of activities that are less innocuous. Of course it is not a high risk for someone trying pot for some sort of recreational adventure but it is common enough that the phrase 'gate keeper drug' has caught on and seems applicable in relation to pot smoking. This may also help to explain the transition from recreational user to avid user.

The same scenario does not tend to apply for peanut butter users, last I heard.
