The same scenario does not tend to apply for peanut butter users, last I heard.

I'd like to state that I've only used peanut butter for recreational purposes, I admit to laying
it on rather thick at times but I've never been addicted.

Pot smoking is considered to be a gate keeper
It is only a gate keeper to illegal activities because it is illegal. It would be the gatekeeper to skateboarding or music appreciation if it were legal. Any harm involved is due to the laws, not an inherent danger.
