I was not particularly thinking of the term 'illegal activities' or what that connotes in using the term 'gate keeper'.

Pot smoking definitely represents a cultural belongingness for many users; which brings with it opportunity and encouragement to associated types of involvement. Some of those are well known for their tendency to self destructive risk taking and some of them are not. I know of no inherent harm that is done simply by ingesting Tetrahydrocannabinol in moderate amounts. However, to deny the cultural 'gate keeper drug' aspects is simply to deny the obvious. To suggest that using pot in the mainstream is a sanitary activity, unassociated with any other inherent cultural connections is also to deny the obvious. I note that you did make the connections to some cultural associations that have positive connotations but chose to discount others.
