Exactly... The goal cannot be to just overthrow Saddam and leave the Iraqis to their own devices.

But if the Iraqi government, under pressure from various factions within the Iraqi population, ask us to leave.. Then let's leave...

Again.. "Image" matters in this regard.. The US already has a legacy of "cut and run" remaining from the Vietnam era. That sent dramatic undercurrents throughout the world that the US was a "fair weather friend" and could not be counted on to stand up and help other people to enjoy the same values that we hold dear in America.

Thus, if we leave, it should be with the clear understanding that the Iraqi people no longer desire our assistance.
