You can't avoid competition even in areas where you would rather not compete.

This is not strictly true, there are always sheltered areas with little competition. Usually this is because one provider is favored by the government. It probably would be better if it was true. These protected industries or other groups effectively sap wealth from the rest of the economy.

The "destruction" involved in the fact that some people lose in the competition to others, is a "creative destruction". Try to get rid of it and you cause disaster. Trying to lessen it or compensate for it possibly might not be so bad but its dangerous. Its expensive even in the short run, and it creates a constituency for long term restrictions or benefits for one favored group at the expense of all others.
