Which is why I find it particularly odd that anyone sharing that concern would advocate a unilateral pull-out from Iraq

I'm not.

What I'm advocating is a more proactive examination of a three state solution. Currently it is political taboo to address that, which IMO is unfortunate.

I have long considered the US military presence to be a liability in Iraq in so far as many Iraqis are hostile to us, i.e. the problem is largely our own making, hence I would rather see a less partisan force, but realistically there is none available. In the end, we should exit completely, but it would be best if the region had achieved some semblance of equilibrium prior to us leaving. Thats why I think we need to start looking actively at the likely final configuration.
