There's always the hope that Alito could be one of those "surprise" justices, that have seemed to be properly aligned by those appointing and supporting them, but once on the court and out of reach of their enablers, have changed their positions greatly. Imagine a job where no one can fire you! Where you KNOW you'll still be there when your critics are long gone..
