Moktada Al Sadr announced the formation of the AL-Mahdi Army.

Yeah.. MAS has tried to distance himself from the Mahdi Militia, but most of felt it was clear that they were his "stick" should his political "carrot" be ignored.

He's a scary extremist, but the one thing I can say for him is that he seems to be an Iraqi nationalist. I can't say I found much evidence that he's still a "favored son" on the part of Iran, after the bloodbath in Najaf and his later humiliation at the hands of Sistani.

Not sure, but it seems likely that he and Sistani have made a deal to counter Iranian influence via SCIRI and Badr Corps.

As for the whether the Mahdi Army can be disbanded or not, I have to admit that I saw so many references to "Mahdi this, Mahdi that.. Jaysh al Mahdi.. etc.. that I frankly couldn't keep their names and allegiances straight.
