I don't think it unusual that someone might sign up for some group and not really remember much about it decades later if they where never really involved in the group. Apparently Alito was not involved in the group, or at least not to any great extent. People in the group at the time now say they didn't even know he was in the group until it became an issue in the hearings.


He cited membership in that group in 1985, many years after he had left Princeton, because what the club stood for was appealing to his prospective employer.

Now, going into the SC, membership in that club is not viewed favorably.

It is clear the dilemma Alito finds himself.

It is clear that his explanation is not clear. In fact, for a Supreme Court Justice it is a terrible explanation. More than terrible.
