Dear DougSF30:

Your die size estimates are high because the outer edge of the CPU die is used for the memory interface, HT ports and XBAR switch. That size won't change because the external interfaces are roughly the same.

Going from one core x 512KB L2 to dual core x 512KB L2 went from 85mm2 to 147mm2. That puts the core at about 62mm2. Adding two cores at the same size gets us to 271mm2. 1MB dies sizes are 114mm2 and 199mm2 for a core size of 85mm2. Quad core 4x1MB L2 then would be 369mm2.
