You will be surprised here in NY, on the trading floor that I am, there are atleast a few traders who have started buying gold for their PA. Mostly it is GLD, and the futures. I myself bought my first few real gold coins last month. It is quite painful to buy physical gold in USA. I have found only a couple of internet based dealers and not even a single bullion coin dealer in NYC. The internet based dealers have a 2-7% bid ask spread on the major coins and takes 2week to 4 week to get coins.
So do not worry about it becoming a crowded trade any time soon. You know it is getting interesting atleast major cities start having a couple of bullion dealer shops and really crowded when Amazon starts offering the Pandas and the Kruggerrands.

Cheers
Gumnam
