Maurice,
You and I could debate the pro's and con's of Victorian values and virtues till the cows come home. Victorian England was great if you were an aristocrat and a hypocrite. That way you could benefit from the spoils of the colonial Empire and have your debauchery all the while singing the praises of morality.
If, however, you happen to be in the majority, working class, life was not much better than those of the peasants in their rice paddies. It always amazes Americans to discover how miserable life was for the working classes of the greatest power on earth at the time. The greatest thing, IMHO, that the early americans did for civilization was to break away from the monarchist system of government.

If the chart of the decline of Great Britain say from 1850 to 1950 was a company that you had stock in, you would want to lynch the management. To my mind many of the royalist were lucky not to have shared the fate of their kin in France and Russia. But I get your point and agree, as with most things, there were some plusses that got totally wiped out in the pendulum swing. Russia's pendulum swing was particularly extreme!

Anyway, getting back to the question at hand, you made the comment, of going somewhere HK, to make money and then returning somewhere nice to live (home) which for you I gather is New Zealand. I have been told NZ resembles England in the 1950's. If this is true I could see how you might be comfortable there, especially, if you hauled some loot before settling. OTOH. Elroy seems to have a dislike for it and so does TJ. TJ thinks Koh Samui is close to paradise but it is Thailand and Thailand is country that does not allow non Thais to own land-how much freedom is that? True that there are ways around this, but if the corrupt politicos decide to really investigate and enforce the existing laws you could find your home (investment) confiscated and your visa denied. That couldn't happen in NZ.
HK I have no idea about.
