If there is alliance being formed with iran it is with the shiaa branch of islam only. I really dont see russia benefiting from a situation with nukes flying around their borders. I think putin thinks he can somehow control the mullahs. I dont know why he thinks that unless he has some ace in the hole we are not aware of.

Right now, Putin is desperately trying to create a formula for enough economic freedom to keep Russia from imploding with enough control/fear to keep him in power. "we do live in interesting times -- let's hope we live through them." That sound ominous.
