"However, it is sad how few homegrown engineers we have. It leaves us vulnerable to the Chinese or Indian Oracle scenerio."

pssst. Oracle was exclusively an American company, until recently. Microsoft built a whole high tech development city in India. What was outsourcing has become ownership over prime products. China and India don't need to perform outsourced work anymore. They can produce their own products that are as good or better than yours and usually at a cheaper price.

I believe it is not so much an issue with our schools per se, but a cultural thing. Indians and Chinese see a career in Engineering as prestigious; Americans still see engineers as nerds...

Ha, the US now barely acknowledges engineers as white collar workers. Hell, I'm training and working with the people in India who will very likely take my job in a few years. They charge half of what we do, which is what our clients see, we need to make them see it also takes them 2 or 3 times as long to do the same work, or often the work quality is less, but accepted because the billing rate per hour is cheaper. Crazy.
