LG.Philips overtakes Samsung in LCD sales

MANHASSET, N.Y. — South Korean-based LG.Philips LCD Co. has displaced Samsung as the world's largest supplier of large-sized thin-film-transistor (TFT) LCD panels, despite a surge by Samsung at the end of 2005, according to preliminary data from market research firm iSuppli Corp.

The El Segundo, Calif.-based firm said LG.Philips LCD captured 21.4 percent share of shipments for TFT-LCD panels sized 10 in. and larger for 2005, edging out Samsung, which garnered a 20.9 percent market share.

Samsung was the leading supplier of TFT-LCDs in 2004, said iSuppli. But a year ago, LG.Philips LCD began full production at its Generation 6 TFT-LCD fab, enabling the company to overtake its South Korean rival.

Continuing the endless game of one-upmanship that characterizes competition in the large-sized TFT-LCD market, Samsung responded by commencing operations at its joint-venture facility with Sony Corp., S-LCD, the world's first seventh-generation TFT-LCD fab, last April.

Samsung started closing in on LG.Philps the fourth quarter, accounting for 20.7 percent of unit shipments, bettering LG.Philips' 20.1 percent share, according to iSuppli.

The firm expects the market-share battle between LG.Philips LCD and Samsung to continue in 2006, as both companies bolster LCD capacity to jockey for leading position in the flat-panel TV market, despite hints that a panel surplus may be developing.

Both firms are bidding to establish size standards for large-sized LCD-TVs, iSuppli predicts. Samsung is promoting 40 inches as the most efficient size, while LG.Philips LCD is backing the 42-inch dimension.

AMAT was disappointing today, up less than the Naz on a % basis. Perhaps this is because they have not yet reported.
