Rightly or wrongly, I am inclined to believe that overtime the Chinese will cease to be communists. When they begin to exhibit non-communist characteristics, I am sure Taiwan will probably be won over, and then a United China will emerge as a super economic power. I believe this is something neither the US nor Russia nor Japan would like to see happen in the foreseeable future or ever.

I believe China adopted Communism by force of circumstances of history. A mammoth purge was necessary. I agree that the ensuing bloodbath that occurred was unnecessary. But I am sure that 25 to 55 years ago when China was seen as the "Yellow Peril" a lot of people in the "Free World" did not mind the death of so many "commies". For all I know, they muttered beneath their breath, "Serves those bastards right."

During my recent tour of China, I was informed that as China had suffered so many mammoth calamities (floods, earthquakes and famines, internecine wars) in past centuries, China was quite enured to suffering on a vast scale. And so the millions that died during Mao's time was more or less stoically accepted by a large segment of the Chinese population. As China, with a population of 1.3 billion and rising, does not provide health and medical benefits to her masses, each and every individual is obliged to maintain good health with proper eating and Tai Chi and traditional medicine, and each married couple is limited to having only 1 child. And so the rate of growth of the Chinese population is severely limited. In light of this, it is hard to understand why so many people in the west are fearful of China's rising power. What do you think?
