You ask, "Why bother." Well, I am not as concerned about the commandeering or pirating itself as I am about the potential use of these missing ships. These ships are reconfigured, re-painted, and re-documented -- usually within Indonesia – and vanish from the radar screens.

It is not difficult to envision something akin to the World Trade Center attack; just picture one or two of these large vessels/freighters being used to transport a WMD into a seaport city; and then a suicidal detonation scenario.

The muslim-controlled shipping routes to the east of Saudi Arabia, particularly within Micronesia and Indonesia Island chains -- to the north of Australia -- are notably infested with pirates. It is my understanding that for that reason these areas are among the most dangerous sailing on earth. This can be verified with a Google search for modern piracy.
