Like what again. Going back a little bit:

The central tenet of this report is that communications equipment vendors must creat architectures for video-centric triple-play and quadruple-play, including wireless networks, or they will perish.

Re Cisco's Plans :

Here is a (scanned & which may contain typos) portion of an Argus Research Report, dated November 18, 2005

Their 12 Month & 3 Year Recommendations were Buy,
with a Sector Rating of OverWeight:

The KEY WORDS here are IPTV, & Triple-Play, or Quadruple-Play,
which takes into account In Home R.F. (various types of
Wi-Fi & probably Wi-Max)

Although S-A is regarded as a leading provider of set top boxes,
cable and DSL modems and cable CMTS (head-end) systems, its
capabilities extend well beyond that narrow definition.

Cisco views the addition and integration of and synergies with the S-A assets as a means of strengthening its quadruple-play capabilitiesin the carrier market, while extending its footprint in the digitally connected home .

Scientific-Atlanta's deep experience in th video market, in
particular, will aid Cisco's pursuit of carrier triple-play business, for cable
companies as well as traditional carriers pushing into IPTV.

We recently released our communications equipment industry annual
report, titled Telco Video Driving Triple Play, Changing the Industry.

The central tenet of this report is that communications equipment vendors must creat architectures for video-centric triple-play and quadruple-play, including wireless networks, or they will perish.

While only time will tell if Cisco is getting value for its money, we regard the aquisition as a necessary step as cisco evolves from a data-centric equipment maker to a provider of integrated next-generation converged network solutions.

Regarding Linksys (and Cisco's new Mesh Networks company)-
I think these are likely parts of the 4 part scheme.
Cisco also recently gained and cross licensed
new Wi-Fi & Wi-Max patents, so that may fit into the picture.

No fridges, ranges, or washing machines there, I am sure.

Not so much in the home consumer market as in the business consumer market to allow Cisco to provide end-to-end telecomm solutions. For example, we are installing VoIP using Cisco switches, and the handsets will be Cisco as well. Handsets are considered consumer items, but Cisco-branded units are guaranteed to operate on Cisco VoIP system.
