Oh come on, just because someone speculated that GOOG decided to publicize this you cite it as real? Tell me their reasoning. Do you think they can calculate whether there would be public outcry or public admiration, and what good would it do them? Nobody takes that kind of risk belatedly and consciously because public relations events like that are completely unpredictable and could easily backfire. They don't need that kind of publicity, and they are not the kind of company that would belatedly manipulate the public interest that way. Just shows the amount of jealousy out there that anybody would even speculate thus. They need a monopoly on real estate/eyeballs and ever greater inflows of ad revenue. PERIOD.

For example, someone on the thread suggested that Google raised this DOJ thing from ashes -- highlighting the fact that MSN and Yahoo complied with the govt. request.

I DID NOT suggest that goog raised this DOJ thing from the ashes. I was speculating that maybe GOOG chose to issue their PR saying "we're going to fight this", on the day of a pre-planned ABC news segment from the Googleplex.

I don't know if the DOJ or GOOG were the ones to issue the first PR salvo in this but if it was GOOG, it was mighty convenient. Again I don't know though. I think the PR has worked to GOOGs advantage, personally.
