mike, the essential thing to realize about the IRA scenario is not that the IRA changed its stripes, but that everybody else got tired of the troubles. Britain, Ireland, and most of the people of Northern Ireland wanted them to stop. So there was pressure to stop.

But in the Mideast, who wants it to stop? Israel for sure. Jordan and Lebanon too. But Egypt? Not really. Saudi Arabia. No way. Syria and Iran? You must be kidding me. They need it to continue, badly, and they are funding the conflict with millions of dollars.

So there will be no IRA scenario. Instead we will see the left rushing to call Hamas "moderates" just because they decided they were strong enough now to take part in the elections. Then they will pressure Israel to give concessions to Hamas for the "peace process". Hamas will be glad to collect them.

As one Hamas candidate said coyly today, "negotiations with Israel are not taboo." Of course not. It is only MAKING and KEEPING a deal that is forbidden. Cf. the Treaty of Hudibaiya. They are certainly smart enough to learn from the successes of Arafat's career.
