Groupthink is probably very adaptive when you are defending yourself on some lonely plain from another clan that wants to kill yours and take all your stuff. Unfortunately high civilization, and our adaptations that predate heightened, civilization don't mesh. I'm not sure what you do about it. I think a lot of this is bred in the bone. You're either rational, or your not. And the or nots frequently win out- because they are so loud, and so sure.

Groupthink is often rewarded- even in our culture. Who wants to be called a traitor, or a Davidian, just for seeing things differently? And how many people are willing to call someone a traitor based on a different POV, and how many people step up to call that irrational namecalling wrong? Well, I think we know the answer.

One reason I love working for myself is the ability to avoid groupthink, and never being forced to go along with it by some bureaucratic hierarchy. It is endemic in government agencies where the leadership designates a mission or a goal and everyone else exists to implement the plan and make the boss look good.

One of the main reasons I quit government was a lack of interest in being the loyal clipboard carrier for little tin gods with a bureaucratic title.

Political partisans are just variations on the theme. But they dominate the White House and Congress.
