Good point. Perhaps their plan isn't workable, but I know that we can become energy independent by dramatically ramping up renewables like solar and wind, even if it means going nuclear. I think we can do it within a few years, by 2025 it would be no problem. Technology just keeps improving every year.

A good example of how little we've actually done in way of energy indpendence is off-shore wind power. Here in NJ, they have a moratorium on off-shore wind power until March 2006. If the proposed off-shore wind power fields are developed off of NJ, they could provide our state with a whopping 40% of our electrical needs. I don't see why southwestern states can't go mainly solar in this day and age. California is poised to build 1 GW of solar over the next five years in two large utility scale plants (I'm not talking about the smaller installations). A little renewable here a little renewable there and before you know it, we won't need foreign oil anymore.
