It sure seems like a done deal if you live in a bubble market. You are right that without a home as a hedge your purchasing power in dollars by keeping your assets in US stocks, bonds and cash the past four years has been reduced by at least 40-50%. Few of us Americans can afford an average hotel in a European city these days..
