Longer-term, here's perhaps how one can weed out some of the uncertainty on the options issue. Its a brilliant (IMO) little tool called the ISE sentiment index. It measures only long transactions on options from non-institutional buyers(i.e. no market makers or any institutional transaction.....don't ask me how they do this). But in the end, its just individuals being monitored:

You can read how the ISEE score is calculated, but I look at the 50 day MA of the number and look for 200 as the number where I would start to exercise caution.

This is the only P/C tool I use now.
