Actually, it's a nationwide exit poll of 13,500 voters drawn from a statistically targeted population. The poll contains a margin of error of 1.1% with a 99.7% confidence interval.

Nevertheless, the polls have been pretty consistent from election to election. Democrats tend to draw on the under-educated, blue collar union workers, government workers, academia and lawyers. Republicans get middle class, white collar workers, professionals and other taxpayers unaffiliated with special interests.

But when it comes to presidential elections, it's always a choice between two candidates. And as long as Democrats keep nominating people like Al Gore and John Kerry, "support" for the Republican candidate will always be higher than you think it should be.
