"...I still know what was needed to build the country, which entailed deficits, which did pay for themselves."

Er... for most of the 19th. century the US ran deficits (as an 'emerging economy') but they were relatively VERY SMALL. And they were actually paid off.

When was the last time the government paid off a deficit? Our country is no longer an 'emerging economy', that's long past. (The only way we 'pay off' anything as a nation now is by inflating the hell out of the currency, impoverishing the entire country so that devalued currency can be used to pay debts. Rome tried that, too, in the later years... degrading their monetary base until it collapsed.) The biggest fan of this process is the politicians, because monetary inflation is like a secret tax on the public, one that the pols never have to record a vote for --- that's why they like it so much.

Now, REGARDLESS of the economic environment, the government ALWAYS runs deficits. That is a sign of sickness and decay.

"...But fighting a war for the benefit of another country is stupid, IMO. If the tribes, or sects, of the muslims want to fight each other, we should let them kill each other...."

Sun Tsu would agree with you.

"...Anywhere there is fighting between factions of the same nation, we should pull our people out of there, and let them fight it out themselves."

Butting into civil wars will nearly always piss off at least *one* of the parties to the conflict. :)

"As far as fiscal prudence goes, I think that all of the welfare programs that are being abused by those that know how to cheat the system, should be stopped immediately. And foreign aid going to a nation that is not in our corner, should be stopped immediately. Some money should be spent to investigate, and prosecute, the Medicare fraud that is rampant, and the saving will be far more than the expense. Get rid of bilingual school teaching. If anybody wants to live here, make them learn American English. The only reason I don't mention social security, is because that is supposed to be money that was taken from the paychecks of workers for decades, and they deserve to get it back when they need it. That should not allow multi millionaires to collect social security though. They don't need any help."

That's all fine and well... but do you favor cutting federal spending enough to balance the budget? (Or are you one of those 'hem-and-haw' type of folks who always seem in the end to come out for MORE spending and a BIGGER government and perennial deficits?) Would you support a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution to force the hand of spendthrift politicians... or do you still believe that the politicians will 'magically' reform one day all on their own?

>>I hate COMMUNISM, socialism, and any other system that would work against free trade, and individual advancement through their own efforts. IOW, government has no business to mess with business<<

That is the REAL problem today. All modern western governments have become so busy redistributing incomes that all those earning today's higher incomes despair at actually improving their own lives. At the same time, their partly or wholly idle neighbours expect that the government will act to ensure that they all get a part of the incomes of the more productive. The world today runs on the old Communist tenet: "From each according to his ability to each according to his need."

What we have all around us today is actual Communism, disguised in government propaganda as "free markets". Some governments even refer to it as "Capitalism"!
