Egypt sees an advantage here:

how long before Israel is at War with Egypt and Hamas?

DEBKAfile reports: Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni fails to win Egyptian support on Hamas

February 1, 2006, 6:28 PM (GMT+02:00)

Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit declared after his talks in Cairo with Tzipi Livni on her first overseas mission as foreign minister: Egypt poses no conditions for Hamas to disarm, repudiate terrorism or recognize Israel. The word “conditions” does not figure in the Egyptian lexicon. He went on to say: We ask Israel to free all Palestinian tax money. We do not support punishment of the Palestinian people.” He urged the Hamas not to run away from reality but at the same called for “mutual recognition.”

This assertion contradicted reports by Israeli correspondents in Livni’s party who claimed that Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and intelligence minister Omar Suleiman had fully backed the Israeli line on Hamas. Some leaks claimed Abu Mazen who is also visiting the Egyptian capital, agreed to stipulate that, before being entrusted with forming a government, Hamas must agree to recognize Israel, abandon terrorism and disarm. This was not confirmed by the Palestinian leader’s spokesmen.

In fact, the foreign minister and Egyptian leaders did not reach accord on the Hamas issue and no joint communiqué was issued on her talks in Cairo.
