I had read it was 15%. A poster just said it was 8%. There's been plenty in the news about it- clearly not all of it was correct, but still, one ought to know that servers are now taxed on their imputed tips, even if one isn't sure of the exact amount. I think that is why so many restaurants now tack on a 15% service charge on large parties, to protect their servers. I think it's something any educated diner would have heard about- although maybe not. I guess I wouldn't expect everyone dining at a greasy spoon to know about it, but anyone at a good restaurant I would think would have heard of this.

The above is pretty much what I have in mind about tipping.
