I am all for spending on the kids and 100 dollar laptops and no war and wish our military spending had went into much more productive things - but Roman leaders couldn't push a button to do thier dirty work - it took lots of soldiers dying and killing thier fellow man face to face - its a different world today.

Rome fell because it could not maintain their military spending and control over areas.

Control - that is what it is all about - and in romes day that took winning the hearts and minds or pocketbooks of many men - you can do with a few missles and tanks and warships - what took millions of men in the past. In romes day - to put down an IRAN aqueduct and crush their infrastructure or demolish a city - took tons and tons of soldiers - today we can do that with just a few bombers and satellites. I bet if the war mongers want to stop iran nuke plants - it will only take a handful of bombers and a few precision laser guided bombs - Rome could only dream to the gods to have such might concentrated into so little independent control.

Look at Chavez - what will his 1 million citizens and rifles do to bombers that have satellites looking down on them from 20 to 60K feet up? :( We dont have to maintain our military spending, we can cut it substantially and still have a much superior technological war machine - for a long time into the future from what I see.

He is still thinking of roman technology in a STAR WARS future.

DJ Chavez Mulls Buying Weapons To Equip 1 Mln Venezuelans

CARACAS (AP)--President Hugo Chavez said Saturday that he was considering the purchase of enough rifles to equip one million Venezuelans ready to repel a possible U.S. invasion.

During a speech warning his supporters that Washington was considering an invasion of Venezuela, Chavez said that 100,000 Russian-built Kalashnikov assault rifles would be enough to go into battle.

"We still need a higher number of rifles. The 100,000 Russian rifles are not enough, Veneuzuela needs to have one million well-equipped and well-armed men and women," he said.

"I've started making contacts with some countries" that would be able to supply the firearms, Chavez told the crowd of supporters to a rousing applause.

The book also examines current government spending that has brought the national debt to 7.5 trillion dollars and critiques the Republican leadership. He talked about his time in Congress, the history of inefficiencies in the government, the federal deficit, and ethics problems.
