I guess you must not have been paying attention like most Americans. For some time now, OBL and al Qaida have been upset that Bush I established airbases in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War......in what Muslims consider Mecca. Mecca is a specific city in Saudi Arabia, not some fabricated collective abstract view of Muslims. Non-muslims are not allowed in Mecca. The bases were not in Mecca. I know, I know......you think its no big deal but to them it is. It would be the equivalent of them building a huge mosque on the Washington Monument lawn. A better analogy would be if the Saudis built a huge military base in Phoenix at the same time that the Chinese army was invading Mexico. The US bases were built there to stop Saddam from making Saudi Arabia his follow on step after Kuwait, and were greatly welcomed by the Saudi dictatorship at the time.
