guess you must not have been paying attention like most Americans. For some time now, OBL and al Qaida have been upset that Bush I established airbases in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War......in what Muslims consider Mecca.

Mecca is a specific city in Saudi Arabia, not some fabricated collective abstract view of Muslims. Non-muslims are not allowed in Mecca. The bases were not in Mecca.

Whether you or I agree or not, OBL, his followers and many Muslims see all of SA as Mecca....not just the city.

I know, I know......you think its no big deal but to them it is. It would be the equivalent of them building a huge mosque on the Washington Monument lawn.

A better analogy would be if the Saudis built a huge military base in Phoenix at the same time that the Chinese army was invading Mexico. The US bases were built there to stop Saddam from making Saudi Arabia his follow on step after Kuwait, and were greatly welcomed by the Saudi dictatorship at the time.

First, the Saudi dictatorship is hardly in favor........its robbing the country blind. Secondly, the idea that Saddam was planning to invade Saudi Arabia is interesting science fiction but that's all it is. Thirdly, Saddam thought he had tacit approval from the US to invade Kuwait. Apparently, there was no one more shocked than he when we went after him in Kuwait.
