The problem is that the Kims are genuinely scared for their lives and their hold on power.

The mullahs, or at least a very influential cliche of ruling mullahs and their agents, don't fear for their lives and believe they are ushering in the shiite version of the Second Coming.

That's why I can't agree with Barnett, who seems to see them like Soviet commissars. Unlike the Soviets, I believe the mullahs genuinely believe their own ideology.
