Over a 25 year career in technology, I've interviewed more than 2,000 candidates and hired a few hundred, here in Silicon Valley. And, yes, compared to China and India, our education system is lacking, at least by my observation in high tech. Coupled with the cultural difference (students who want to be engineers in China and India are valued; here, they are ostracized geeks), we are falling behind - rapidly.

Companies have also discovered that many in India speak as good or gooder English than call center applicants here, with much lower costs. Part of that additional cost is health care, which has skyrocketed. We could, in addition to improving education, drive down our health care costs to make our workers more competitive.

Those billions wasted on Halliburton and graft in Iraq could be put to much better use.
