So riddle me this. Why does any citizen need an automatic weapon like an Uzi or an M-16 for self-protection?

I don't know if you've ever been to a gun show, but it's ridiculously easy to buy a gun at one.

Are you kidding? Never.

J.,

re:I don't know if you've ever been to a gun show, but it's ridiculously easy to buy a gun at one. I bought a pistol from a "private collection", went through NO background check

Are you trying to confuse poor ted with private transfers versus licensed dealers?

You can also buy a gun from your mom, brother, neighbor or via the local newspaper without a background check. The NICS check is only required when buying from a licensed dealer.

The infamous "gun show loophole" is not really a loophole at all, it's just the fact you can meet private sellers at a gun show and buy from them legally. To close the "loophole" you would have to address the issue of private transfers as a whole in any setting.

The NRA and others don't support the idea of regulating private transfer sales because the cost to use a licensed dealer is usually $50 and adds quite a bit when dealing with used guns sometimes costing only a $100. Now if NICS or dealers would offer this service for free, I and perhaps even the NRA would support such checks. But most pro gun advocates consider this idea to be a back door way to increase the costs of ownership, or even an invasion of privacy.

Then of course there's the whole waiting period thing when dealing with handguns and private transfers.
