The attempt by the country of 9 million people to become the world's first practically oil-free economy is being planned by a committee of industrialists, academics, farmers, car makers, civil servants and others, who will report to parliament in several months. Exactly what we should be doing here... with decent leadership, a Jack Kennedy or an Eisenhower, we could be on the same pragmatic path. Isn't Taro from Sweden? Is that why they kicked him out? re: Last week George Bush surprised analysts by saying that the US was addicted to oil and should greatly reduce imports from the Middle East. The US now plans a large increase in nuclear power. And then they back-peddled, when SA said "What?!". I've always thought there might be an unwritten multi-administration deal with Saudi Arabia (and maybe other OPEC countries) that the US wouldn't push the conservation button as long as they would turn the spigots up at our request. And that would have made some (realpolitik) sense with oil between $15 and $30 a barrel, and a relatively stable ME. Now? Any number of ME flash points could send us into a severe oil crisis, even cartoons for Christ's sakes. With 4.5% of the worlds population and 25% of the world's consumption it's a glaring weakness... we are at their mercy. Bush keep talking about "protecting us". Shit, protecting us from what? A Nuke in Manhattan wouldn't change our way of life all that much. A multi-year oil crisis would bring us to our knees... we would probably never recover. John
