Look at the reality shows on TV. Look at "People" magazine. Look at rap music, heavy metal music, and so forth. The Acadamy Awards. Watch the groups of youngsters orbiting shopping malls. Celebrity worship. The growing popularity of tattoo parlors and body piercing shops. You name it.

You don't see anything to respect. It's all style with no substance.

I would really like to see this country go back to basics.

Respect is a somewhat vague term in the sense that it covers widely different levels of respect.

I do believe a certain level of respect doesn't have to be earned. That level is pretty low and mostly covers just treating people with basic human decency.

I agree that a serious level of respect does need to be earned. The type of respect that would normally cause someone to say "I respect you" has to be earned.
